My name is Colin Barry, and I am a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College (2026-2027 academic year), where I teach and mentor students in engineering.
I recently completed my PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, where I researched digital health technologies in the Digital Health (DigiHealth) Lab, headed by Professor Edward Wang, in collaboration with the UCSD Design Lab.
My research builds novel smartphone-based measurement systems that expand access to quality healthcare and enable preventative-medicine interventions, spanning blood pressure, pupillometry, and photoplethysmography. To bring this work to patients, I cofounded Billion Labs Inc. to develop the research into FDA-regulated commercial products.
Beyond research, I am generally interested in effective learning and teaching. I strive not only to learn from the world class researchers here at UCSD, but also to pass along the knowledge, skills, and excitement to the next generation of researchers. I hope to continue my process of improving as an educator as well as a researcher by participating in mentorship, teaching, and outreach programs.
